Yes, forever, since before I ever knew about the fandom. They're unmoving, unchanging faces and eyes, the clearly constructed, faux, artificial look, the uncanny movement, all scream imposter and death. They are like Screamers, or the Terminator (first movie) or any other form of mock animal/human. That they've become the focus of the fandom is the worst part, because it's such a limited form of what the fandom encompasses, they are literally malformed, I can't think of a single artist that draws furries like what fursuits look like and I don't envision these things in the stories I read.
And the use of them for sex seems insane, it's wrapping some dude in a really childish form of anthropomorphism in a suit that's terrible for sex-play; puppy/pony play makes so much more sense and involves actually sexually appealing forms because you see the persons actual body and the head isn't baby-proportioned. Fursuits are the number one reason I don't associate with this fandom beyond the art and writing.
It sort of started around 2000 when conventions and internet roleplay replaced fanzines and comics and the furry lifestyle became a thing. You also had media people pushing the fandom as a freakshow instead of a genre and making TV shows about fursuiters and 'plushie' collectors instead of the artists, comics and characters that formed the core of the fandom. The same way people used to make fun of trekkies and comic book enthusiasts before they became unbelievably lucrative.
Plus people got good at making them and they became a form of conspicuous consumption. Mascots do get used by large corporations because they're apparently effective to the larger population. I can't deny that they have a fundamental appeal, but I think I was more keyed into the cartoons I watched as a kid that were hyper-emotional, whereas fursuits are the exact opposite.

It's a tragedy for the fandom that the news and the general population associates it with murrsuits and sex parties rather than the actual beautiful 2d and 3d artwork artists work so hard to create.
